Mangrove forests are one of the world’s most precious resources for people and marine life and the need to protect them has never been more urgent. Across the globe, environmental pioneers, photographers, and coastal communities are using powerful visual storytelling to highlight the importance of mangrove ecosystems. Through compelling imagery, these efforts are helping raise awareness, inspire action, and showcase the critical role mangroves play in protecting coastlines and supporting livelihoods.

In recognition of this work, the Mangrove Action Project has officially opened submissions for the 12th Mangrove Photography Awards 2026. The awards celebrate the beauty, diversity and fragility of global mangrove forests while raising awareness. Outstanding photography captures the beauty, biodiversity, and significance of mangrove ecosystems; while also shedding light on the challenges they face in the context of climate change.

Mangroves are among the most valuable coastal ecosystems, acting as natural buffers against storm surges, supporting rich biodiversity, and storing significant amounts of carbon. Through photography, these stories can reach wider audiences, helping to bridge the gap between science, policy, and public awareness.

The Mangrove Photography Awards provides a global platform for photographers, both professional and amateur—to showcase their work in wildlife, People, Landscape, Threats, Underwater and Conservation stories to elevate conservation narratives and contribute to a growing movement for environmental protection.

Winners will be awarded in each category, in addition to an overall Mangrove Photographer of the Year, Young Mangrove Photographer of the Year, and a People’s Choice Award, with added UNESCO Award, Emirates Award, and Arabian Gulf Award.
