About Us
Wetlands International is the only global not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wetlands. We are deeply concerned about the loss and deterioration of wetlands such as lakes, marshes and rivers. Our vision is a world where wetlands are treasured and nurtured for their beauty, the life they support and the resources they provide.
Wetlands International Eastern Africa is dedicated to maintaining and restoring wetlands – for their environmental values and the services they provide to people. We work through a network of offices, partners and experts to achieve our goals. Most of our work is financed on a project basis by governments, development partners and private donors. We are also supported by government and NGO membership.
A network organisation—working locally and globally
Our head office is based in the Netherlands and our regional office in Kenya.
We have a network of offices around Africa with the independent entities sharing the similar approach. We work at the field level to develop and mobilise knowledge, and use the practical experience to advocate for better policies.
Our Core Values
We maintain the following core values:
- Our work is globally relevant
- Our work is based on sound science
- We work through partnerships and with a wide range of sectors
- We respect traditional values and knowledge
- We respect human rights and aim to contribute to gender equality
- We work in a transparent and accountable way
WETLANDS INTERNATIONAL EASTERN AFRICA STRATEGIC PLAN 2024-2030
The Wetlands International Eastern Africa Strategic Plan (2024–2030) sets out a regional roadmap to safeguard and restore wetlands for both people and nature. It builds on the organisation’s mission to inspire and mobilise society through partnerships, science-based approaches, and community engagement to ensure resilient wetland ecosystems across Eastern Africa.
The strategy is guided by a Theory of Change centred on inspiring, mobilising, and upscaling action—raising awareness, strengthening stakeholder participation, and expanding successful conservation interventions.
Implementation focuses on five strategic result areas:
- Restoring wetland ecosystems and strengthening climate resilience.
- Supporting sustainable livelihoods and community stewardship.
- Advancing policy and governance frameworks.
- Strengthening research, knowledge, and technical capacity.
- Building organisational sustainability and partnerships.
Operating across priority landscapes such as coasts and deltas, river basins, lakes, and peatlands, the plan responds to major threats including climate change, land-use pressures, pollution, and biodiversity loss.
Overall, the strategy positions Wetlands International Eastern Africa to scale impact through adaptive management, regional collaboration, and community-centred approaches, aiming for resilient ecosystems, stronger livelihoods, and lasting conservation outcomes.
